My initial reaction to “Chinatown” was a double-take: I had to make sure I wasn’t listening to the soundtrack from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China. The film’s score, and this song, both feature Chinese instruments mixed with a film noir style sax.
Like Carpenter’s enigmatic scores, “Chinatown” is a bit cheesy, but never in an overwhelming way. Instead, it’s playful. It’s fun.
It’s an homage to the sounds of China, but never an overt replication of them.
